[And the tip-off of the 2015-16 section tournaments as the Cards Alec Wensman (25) controls the opening tap.]

2-23-16-2 - Copy

[Jaran Roste (1), in background, and Spencer Hockert (15) apply full-court D.]

2-23-16-3 - Copy

[Oh, we’re playing Sartell – here Jake Drew (33) closes on a Sabre shooter.]

2-23-16-4 - Copy

[And Jake at the free throw – he provides a lot of energy off the bench.]

2-23-16-5 - Copy

[Brayden Amundson (23) goes high for a deflection.]

2-23-16-6 - Copy

2-23-16-7 - Copy

[A Cardinal with the head of a Sabre????]

2-23-16-8 - Copy

[It must have been Jaran as the ball exits, stage left.]

2-23-16-9 - Copy

[Jaran goes for a steal – stealing is legal in the sport if executed correctly.]

2-23-16-10 - Copy

[At the half.  Yes, there was concern – we were the No. 2-seed, the Sabres No. 7.  We had defeated them by over 20 twice during the regular season.  A little over confident?]

2-23-16-11 - Copy

[Jaran had a slow start – mostly because he doesn’t look to score.  But as the game progressed he saw the need.  He usually doesn’t take a lot of 3’s, but I think he was 3-for-3 on them in this game, including this one.  I think he finished with around 20 points.]

2-23-16-12 - Copy

[Jake shooting more free throws – as a result of his always mucking around!]

2-23-16-13 - Copy

[Hockey goalie, Amy Jost, takes the student fans, mostly the girls’ basketball and hockey teams, on a roller coaster ride.]

2-23-16-14 - Copy

2-23-16-15 - Copy

2-23-16-16 - Copy

2-23-16-17 - Copy

[Matt Bloom (3) on the defensive point.]

2-23-16-18 - Copy

[No. 35 for the Sabres was a thorn in our side the entire 1st half . . . ]

2-23-16-19 - Copy

[Then we put our secret weapon, Robert Anderson (35), on him, and it changed the flow of the game.  Robert was our player of the game – the radio announcers agreed with that!]

2-23-16-20 - Copy

[We started getting the ball into Alec, and he completed several “and 1’s.”]

2-23-16-21 - Copy

[And Jake again.  He and Robert provide a lot of energy and defense off the bench – and Jake was one of 4 Cards in double digits in scoring.]

2-23-16-22 - Copy

[And then offensively, Spencer and Jaran took over the game.]

2-23-16-23 - Copy

[At one point in the 2nd half, we were down 6 . . . ]

2-23-16-24 - Copy

[With about 6 minutes left, it was still a very close game . . . ]

2-23-16-25 - Copy

[Then we went on a 22 – 0 scoring run, fueled by defense and fast break lay-ups.]

2-23-16-26 - Copy

[And made our free throws down the stretch.]

2-23-16-27 - Copy

[Jake battles inside again – a very good rebounder at 6’2″.]

2-23-16-28 - Copy

[With the game in hand, other such as Zach Harstad (21) got playing time.]

2-23-16-29 - Copy

[Next up, this Saturday against Sauk Rapids, the section semi-finals at St. Cloud State @ 3:30.]

We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors.  ~  Weldon Drew

Cardinals – 54, St. Cloud Tech – 25

February 22

[Always in time to catch a bit of the JV action.]

2-22-16-1 - Copy

[Alison Amundson (3) on the free throw line.]

2-22-16-2 - Copy

[Drat, can’t see a number – probably should put the number on their trunks as they are otherwise oft obscured by ponytails. Don’t they have laws against that in car licensing?]

2-22-16-3 - Copy

[Another big win for the JV!]

2-22-16-4 - Copy

[Do you know what’s red and smells like blue paint?]

2-22-16-5 - Copy

[Red paint!!]

2-22-16-6 - Copy

[OK, which direction are we going?]

2-22-16-7 - Copy

[The redoubtable Ms Alli Haar (standing, gray jacket), from our last state tournament team.  Probably time we went back again?]

2-22-16-8 - Copy

2-22-16-9 - Copy

[And Kayla Feldhake (43) goes up for the opening tap.]

2-22-16-10 - Copy

2-22-16-11 - Copy

[Somebody get it!!]

2-22-16-12 - Copy

[Emma Ziegler (1) applying full-court pressure.]

2-22-16-13 - Copy

[The 3 guards, Emma with Macy Hatlestad (11) and Kendall Kohler (3) work to prevent any team from ever getting into the front court.]

2-22-16-14 - Copy

2-22-16-15 - Copy

[Macy, “Ole Ms. Automatic,” at the free throw line.]

2-22-16-16 - Copy

[Emma Schmidt (25) tries her hand at the stripe.]

2-22-16-17 - Copy

[As does Kelby Olson-Rodel (13).  Kelby and Kiyana Miller (21) kinda play the same roll for the girls’ team that Jake Drew and Robert Anderson do for the boys.]

2-22-16-18 - Copy

[Macy launches a 3 – probably good!]

2-22-16-19 - Copy

[Zig at the line.]

2-22-16-20 - Copy

[Macy brings it up with Kelby.]

2-22-16-21 - Copy

[Oh well, we can play this game without a ball.]

2-22-16-22 - Copy

[Chalk it up.]

2-22-16-23 - Copy

[Yup, that’s right.  We really weren’t clicking on offense – but nothing wrong with the D!]

2-22-16-24 - Copy

[Kinda like this one.  Kendall and Macy have been paired at guard since their first pair of sneakers.]

2-22-16-25 - Copy

[The trend line that’s helping is seeing such a Zig (here) and Kiyana looking for and taking that mid-range jumper.]

2-22-16-26 - Copy

[Kendall roars into the face of the defense.]

2-22-16-27 - Copy

[Somebody tickles the twine.]

2-22-16-28 - Copy

[The bench stands for unison clapping  as the game closes down.]

2-22-16-29 - Copy

[Not an unexpected result.  With the win, the Cards cliched no worse than a tie for the conference championship.  We host Willmar Friday in the last regular season game – a win will clinch the outright championship.  The Cards are currently ranked 9th in class AAA.]

State (Day 4) and Gophers!

February 20

[Well, there was no Day 3, and that’s the rub.  The Cardinals had almost a 2-day layover before this game, at 9:00 am.  Not an excuse, just an observation.  And because they were playing for the consolation title, again, it didn’t appear to attract their interest.  Before the game, the KXRA broadcast team of DMac and BCun were at their posts in Ridder Arena.]

2-20-16-1 - Copy

[A little slow on the draw myself, here Lauren Niska (21) and Amy Jost (33) are introduced.]

2-20-16-2 - Copy

[Then McKenzie Revering (29)]

2-20-16-4 - Copy

[And Mari Wosepka (18)]

2-20-16-5 - Copy

[McKenna Ellingson (24)]

2-20-16-6 - Copy

[And Alexis Heckert (20)]

2-20-16-7 - Copy

2-20-16-8 - Copy

2-20-16-9 - Copy

[We were playing New Prague.  The Trojans were the No. 5 seed, but it must have been a close call between them and us.  Similar records, would appear to be a good match-up.]

2-20-16-10 - Copy

[But the Trojans have sophomore Catie Skaja (3).  Skaja is a member of the U.S. Women’s National U-18 team that won the world championship.  With 16 of the 22 members of that team from Minnesota, some wag noted that Minnesota had defeated the world!]

2-20-16-11 - Copy

[Skaja is very good and very fast.  She scored on a 2-on-0 rush in the first minute of the game, and the Trojans scored again on anther odd man rush a minute later.  We were behind 2 – 0 and the game wasn’t 2 minutes old.  I believe we had only given up one odd man rush (that I can recall) in the first 2 games?  Obviously, we weren’t into this game.  The coaches called our only time out then to address the issue – but it was to no avail.  If you look closely (ha!), you’ll see we were down 3 – 0 after the 1st period.]

2-20-16-12 - Copy

[The trend continued into the 2nd period – 2 more goals for the Trojans.]

2-20-16-13 - Copy

[And into the 3rd where the Trojans got their final 2 goals for a 7 – 0 win.  I don’t recall the Cards ever having a good scoring opportunity.]

2-20-16-14 - Copy

[If there was a highlight for the Cards, it was that everybody got to play.  And the entire team seemed genuinely excited about that.  Senior goalie Taylor Coker took over to play the 3rd period (I believe they made the goalie change on the fly?) – the 4th line played regular shifts.  But, of course, the seniors did not want to go out this way.]

2-20-16-15 - Copy

[But it was another good season overall.  Thanks again to all our seniors.  We lose a lot of key players  – it will be interesting to see how we develop next year.]

2-20-16-16 - Copy

[The team bus ready to leave Ridder along good ole 4th Street, SE.]

2-20-16-17 - Copy

[Hamming it up waiting for brother Cam to pick us up for lunch.  We had parked in the Dinkytown garage and wanted to leave the car there because we were coming back for the Gopher game in the afternoon.  It was the same day as the North Stars-Blackhawks alumni hockey game at the football stadium so it was going to be a high traffic area.]

2-20-16-18-1 - Copy

2-20-16-19 - Copy

Meanwhile, in downtown Minneapolis . . .

[So brother Cam drove us through downtown on our way to Uptown, his favorite place to go to enjoy the good times in the big city.]

2-20-16-22 - Copy

[Over the Hennepin Avenue bridge.]

2-20-16-23 - Copy

2-20-16-24 - Copy

[Apparently a Minnesota singer and songwriter of some repute.]

2-20-16-25 - Copy

2-20-16-25-1 - Copy

[I think the Orpheum has been here since before electricity.]

2-20-16-26 - Copy

Meanwhile, back at Ridder Arena . . .

[The Gophers readied for game 2 against the dreaded Badgers.  Team captains Lee Stecklein (2) and Hannah Brandt (22) discuss Jess Lourey’s next book with the on-ice constabulary.]

2-20-16-27 - Copy

[Last home game of the regular season . . . senior night (errr, afternoon).  Ms Brandt is first, a great All American career!]

2-20-16-28 - Copy

2-20-16-29 - Copy

[Then Brook Garzone (18), defense.]

2-20-16-30 - Copy

[Amanda Kessel (8), forward, another All American career.]

2-20-16-31 - Copy

2-20-16-32 - Copy

[Amanda Leveille (29), goalie . . . OK, we do allow a few Canadians on the team (ha!).]

2-20-16-33 - Copy

[Milica McMillen (13), defense, another stellar career.]

2-20-16-34 - Copy

2-20-16-34-1 - Copy

2-20-16-35 - Copy

[Key players all, but the Gophers should be really good next year, again.]

2-20-16-36 - Copy

2-20-16-37 - Copy

2-20-16-38 - Copy

[And the starters, I believe beginning with Megan Wolfe.]

2-20-16-39 - Copy

2-20-16-41 - Copy

2-20-16-42 - Copy

2-20-16-43 - Copy

2-20-16-44 - Copy

[And we off and skating . . . ]

2-20-16-45 - Copy

[And just like the previous day, the Gophers got an early jump with Sarah Potomak (26), freshman forward (and our other Canadian) scoring at the 3 1/2 minute mark.]

2-20-16-46 - Copy

2-20-16-46-1 - Copy

2-20-16-47 - Copy

2-20-16-48 - Copy

[And then Kate Schipper (6), junior forward, scored at the 5-minute to give us an early 2 – 0 lead, just like the previous game.  The Gophers appeared to be rolling.]

2-20-16-49 - Copy

2-20-16-50 - Copy

2-20-16-54 - Copy

2-20-16-55 - Copy

[Kessel sights an open net, but it appears to be an unruly puck.]

2-20-16-57 - Copy

2-20-16-58 - Copy

[The Badgers weren’t going to be had so easy today.  They got a goal later in the period to make the score 2 – 1 after one.]

2-20-16-59 - Copy

[Another SRO crowd . . . can you spot the Supervisor trying to “cash in” some candy coupons?]

2-20-16-60 - Copy

[Pressure by the Gophers followed by  . . . ]

2-20-16-61 - Copy

2-20-16-61-1 - Copy

[A late period goal by Cara Piazza (10), sophomore forward, put the Gophers up 3 – 1 . . . ]

2-20-16-62 - Copy

2-20-16-63 - Copy

[But a Badger goal a couple minutes later made the score 3 -2 after 2 periods.]

2-20-16-64 - Copy

[The only score in the 3rd period was on a penalty shot by the Badgers.  A Gopher defender threw the puck out of the crease which is a penalty shot penalty.  It was a good move as the Badgers probably would have scored otherwise.  Wisconsin star Annie Pankowski made a great move to score on the shot.  So, it was on to overtime.  There is little to choose between these teams – the Gophers are probably a tad quicker, the Badgers a little stronger, the Gophers maybe more dynamic, but the Badgers are really solid.  I think their strength was wearing us down in this game, and they may have had the advantage going into overtime.  But the Gophers found that extra gear, and at 4 minutes in Ms Pannek got the winning goal for the Gophers.  Go Gohers!  Two days of great hockey!]

Gophers – 4, Badgers – 0

February 19

[We went home after the Northfield game.  The Cardinals wouldn’t be playing again until Saturday morning.  But we came back to the Cities for this Friday night game – a game between the No. 2 & 3 ranked teams in the country (only because Boston College doesn’t have to play us!). The Badgers won two close games when we played them in Madison.]

[This was a welcome back Amanda Kessel day for us.  She had been away from the team for over two years – to play in the Olympics and then to recover from a concussion.  We had seen her play several times during the Gophers long two-year winning streak of a couple years ago. The following three photos are from the StarTribune.]
