How ‘Bout Some Nice Books?

[The supervisor met with Jess Lourey today at Cherry Street Books to discuss our role in promoting her latest novel, December Dread, i.e., the continuing adventures of Mrs. Berns (previously written about extensively in this blog).]

OK, hooey.  But we are delighted to do whatever we can to advertise the greatest series ever written about Battle Lake murder mysteries.  Which reminds me – we haven’t been up there for a while.  Thus, the closest we have been to Chief Wenonga is the photo on the left, borrowed surreptitiously from Jess’s Facebook page (those are his feet).  If you have followed these continuing adventures of Mira James, you know the Chief, and Nut Goodies, are the major love interests in Mira’s life.  Go get ’em . . . and enjoy!  🙂

[OK, they made me join them.  No, really.]

[The supervisor is ready to read.]

[Searching for a segue, I display the monopod the supervisor just got for me as a belated birthday present.  This was deemed necessary in order for an older person to take sharp telephoto pictures of athletes in action.]

[The first photo taken on the monopod – the supervisor no doubt trying to figure out how to edit my latest screed to the 4th estate!]

[Another birthday present – this from the kids.  The title is a play on words – errr, names – as it plays to my occasional title role as Mr. MaintenanceMr. Maintenance, of course, mocks my unhandyness, but there is proof of a male gene in that like all men I enjoy perusing hardware stores, though I have no idea why.  The Tom, of Visiting Tom, is the ultimate handyman, and Perry weaves a marvelous nonfiction story about the life and times of this Wisconsin farmer.  A kind of rural version of Tuesdays With Morrie?

[The author reading from the book.]

[Signing one – for me!  🙂  To Tom (“Tom” circled from the title and arrowed to it’s position behind “To”) – BOOM! Michael Perry  The “Boom” is a reference to the vintage cannon on Tom’s property that he occasionally fires because . . . well, it’s a cannon.]

[Jami and Danny flank the author, who displays his good works and better hair style.]

[Since books involve reading (to some degree) and reading requires education, the next segue is to an institution of higher learning where grandson Tom “visits” with his mom on the Purdue campus.]

[Tom, a/k/a, Mr. Tie-dye, already participating in the Media Graphics Department promo of the Boilermaker basketball team.  🙂 ]

[Continuing the college dorm room theme, this is Tom’s “toaster.”  This is something way beyond the realm of my comprehension, but apparently it is some sort of storage device containing the entire knowledge of the known universe, purchased with the aid of a monthly stipend from the supervisor (as I recall).]

[The modern male dorm room.]

[The modern male roommate.]

[The equivalents in my era were a clock radio and a window ledge for a refrigerator.]

[Conspicuous by their absence are swimsuit model wall posters, or at least one of Steve Jobs?  😉 ]

[Other dorms out the window?]

In keeping with a pledge for continuing  status reports on the contruction of the new Alex high school, these from yesterday.  The parking lot is paved and the foundations are in.  For those still wondering exactly as to its location, in one of these photos, looking north toward downtown, you can see the watertower by 3M:

[That’s me.]

[The foundation, from the parking lot looking south.]

[Looking further south toward where the athletic fields will be.]

[The watertower by 3M.]

[These last two are looking from across the street in the Grand Arbor parking lot.]

And now we end with selections from the Tom Sand collection:

[The redoubtable Mr. Sand.]

And now it’s off to the volleyball tournament – with the monopod!

Volleyball, Courtesy Staff Photographer

On October 4, our Cards hosted 1st place and undefeated in conference, Fergus Falls.  We knew during this game Shanee’ Herd would get her 1,000th dig.  Since we have been following Shanee’s “career” from the time she was selling us Girl Scout cookies, we really wanted to be there.  Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my (if not the supervisor’s 😉  ) control, we could not.  Fortunately, the staff photographer could.  Whatta guy!  The following photos are all his . . . obviously.  I just try to put them in order and make up stuff about what’s happening in them.

Fergus won.  The first job of a reporter is to report.  Them’s the facts.  But it took them 4 games, three decided by just two points.  For whatever reason, the Cards took a game off during the match to worry about a trig (do they still teach it?) exam or a Kim Kardashian sighting.

[The aforementioned Ms. Herd in the middle as the libero, flanked by Natalie Watkins on her right and Jenni Wild on her left.]

[C’mon Otters, give it your best shot!]

[Natalie, Ally, Jenni, Adrianne, and Amanda facing the dreaded Otters on the other side of the net.  Well, Ally’s facing Natalie.]

[Shanee’ serves, the students cheer.]

[I have reason to suspect Shanee’ just got her 1,000th dig!  🙂 ]

[A sheepish grin.  Did you ever wonder how shy embarrassment became “sheepish”?]

[Soon to be a centerpiece setting for Marnee’?]

[Pizza’s on Shanee’!]

[Congratulations, Shanee’!]

[Hugs from the coach!]

[A little styling from Amanda!]

[Meanwhile, back at the ballgame, Jenni prepares for a dig.]

[As a fan, the most attractive feature of volleyball is the sheer joy and exuberance displayed after winning a . . . point!]

[Aaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy!!!!]

[Wow!  That was fun!]

[Another dig for Shanee’?]

[Natalie gets the set.]

[Here’s that trick play again where Ally tricks them by facing the “wrong” way (wink, wink).]

[Adrianne goes up for a hit.]

[And our strategic plan is . . .]

[The joy and exuberance of winning a point.  Oh, I said that already.]

[More “stategery” [sic] . . .]

[There must be something I can say here, but . . .]

[All for one and one for all!]

[Another nail biter.]

[Cards go up for a block.]

[Shanee’ on “D.”]

[Adrianne and Jenni rise to the occasion.]

[If you think there is joy and exuberance after a won point . . .]

[It goes off the charts for a won game!]

[So let’s just sit back . . .]

[And enjoy the moment.]

[Amanda C’s dad for the family scrapbook.]

[I think it’s Tara?]

[Point for the good guys.]

[Let’s hang in there.]

[The end is nigh.  We gave it a good run.]

[Adrianne was selected player-of-the-game!  🙂 ]

[She says, “Come see us at the Alexandria Invite on Saturday.  Volleyball all day long!”]

How ‘Bout Some Nice Music?

Well, since I did promise music in Volleyblog, some time past.  Regarding the title poster, here’s what I e-mailed at the time:   And I give it two thumbs up!  Ruthie & I went last night (September 28).  Big time production play, beginning with Quincy Roers set – three tiers high!  I can’t recall any other play I’ve seen in Alex that had the such a terrific combination of acting, singing, choreography, costumes, lighting . . .  I thought the singing was particularly impressive, especially from the three main characters of Mary Lennox (Bailey Myrin) and the Craven brothers (David Allen Christman and Tim Long).  Even the kids were good (?).  😉  And major kudos have to go to Ben Klipfel, executive director, in what I believe was his directorial debut at AAAA.  I hope you were able to catch it, too?

[On the 27th, Funky Gumbo Trio performed at SAWA.]

We were late arriving at SAWA – a meeting, then volleyball.  Funky Gumbo was playing.  We did not know until we got there that it was Mike Gill’s last performance with the group – he is going to grad school, majoring in saxophone, at either Kentucky or Northern Colorado.  He has been with the group for 3 1/2 years.  They finished the show with Mike’s “signature” song, Sweet Home, Chicago, a 10-minute version that blew us away. Ruthie has always been a big fan!   😉  Unfortunately, my camera decided it wasn’t going to be in focus (?), so it’s like looking at them play under water – but the sound is OK.

The other saxophonist, Paul Meland, is in the high school band, and he had just played earlier at . . . the volleyball game.  I’m sure group leader, founder, and drummer, Bill Engebretson, will fill us in on the names of the other group members.  😉

The supervisor’s favorite song with Mike’s lead:

[The proprietor will miss Mike.]

[The supervisor is a BIG fan!!  😉 ]

On the 4th, a one-man oompah band was on hand for Octoberfest for members at the maritime museum:

[The outdoor landscaping is really taking shape.]

[Inside everything is looking really . . . crisp?]

[The party room.]

[“Dangerous” Dan ladled out sauer kraut and words to live by!  😉 ]

[With brats, potato salad, and St. Pauli Girl dark, what’s not to like?  🙂 ]

On the 9th, Broadway Ballroom hosted the chili cook-off for United Way.  “Hair on fire,” or words to that effect, took away my taste buds on the first sampling:

[Chili presenters, and there were about 40 of them, were often in costumes of the season.  The supervisor, of course, mostly enjoyed the silent auction items.]

[Drat, trumped by the professional fourth estate!]

Uncle Willie’s Gut Bucket Blues Band performed for SAWA’s favorite patrons that evening:

[Terry Kennedy, retired orthopedic surgeon and now guitar maker; Erik Schultz, banker; Al Lieffort, park superintendent for Douglas County.]

[Allegedly other Uncle Willie Fans.]

A late addition to this column:  On October 11, Reverend Raven and the Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys, surely the coolest name in music since the Osmond Brothers, performed at the Phoenix Event Center.  As not yet a close personal friend of the Rev, I did not ask for video rights.  Besides, there were always dancers in my line of sight!  🙂

[The Altar Boys disguised as an empty stage.]

[Oh, there they are!]

In the absence of a personal video, I borrowed one from YouTube.  They’re great fun.  However, you will note they did not have a sax player with them – he (in the video) has since retired.  I do not know if they are looking for a replacement:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ4RCXHKjDI

[Rev likes to wander through his audience while he’s playing.]

[Notorious locals whose panel truck is stationed for a speedy getaway.]

[Still wandering – well-known retired teachers, who are related to each other, seated on the right.]

[Now rising to the heights of a chair!]

[Class of 65er almost hidden in the mood lighting.]

[Dancin’, yeah!!!  The Rev and the Boys threw us off our regularly scheduled date night agenda.  It’s what can happen in Vacationland USA.  We missed the volleyball game, Emergency Stop at SAWA, and the VP debate.  One can only do so much.]

Over the River and Through the Woods . . .

[And they’re off!!]

Do you remember the scene in Dances with Wolves when the ground shook with the coming of the bison?  Well, I guess you had to be there.

Fellow Super Fan Bob “Weakie” Annen and I have talked for years about going to what this year was the 40th Annual Alexandria Lions Cross Country Meet of Champions, particularly during the long and illustrious career of now Golden Gopher Jamie Piepenberg.  It is considered one of the elite cross country meets in the state, Arrowwood Resort provides a great venue, and top teams from all over the state participate.  Well, we never made it before because with age and girth a certain amount of inertia sets in at times.  “Weakie” still couldn’t make it, something about allergies, but I decided this was the year, despite layer-up weather.

There were 24 teams, many from the giant metro schools, and with races for boys and girls JV and varsity there were probably 1,500 runners!  Throw in coaches, parents, hangers-on, roadies, entourages, bus drivers, volunteers, grandparents, vendors . . . well, you had lotsa people out there!  Being the perceptive fellow that I am, I figured parking would be an issue.  Door-to-door, it’s 1.2 miles from our place to Arrowwood – though I already had had my 5-mile walk with the Fat Boys earlier in the morning, I figured walking to the meet would create the least amount of hassle.  I did not take into consideration that 4 layers of clothing would give me hot flashes enroute.

[Parking for the event extended to the stables pasture, about a half mile away.  I passed it as I walked to the race site.  They shuttled people to and from this “lot.”]

I went to see the Alex girls’ varsity (don’t we always?) which features freshmen twin sisters, Bethany and Megan Hasz, who are ranked 4th and 5th in the state, respectively.  In fact, 10 of the top 12 girls in the state would be entered in this race.

[I made it.]

[As I turned in, I could see activity on the golf course.]

[I ran across a pelaton heading up a fairway – these were the JV boys, about 500 of them.  I learned later Stillwater almost completed a clean sweep as they finished 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 – or something like that – and have 40 runners in their JV program.  And their boys’ varsity team is ranked 16th nationally.  I presume this all involves metro-area open enrollment.]

[A closer upper view.]

[I had no idea where I was on the course, where it started or ended, so I hoped to find someone in authority . . . or at least the Dittberners or Marnee’!]

[Camping?  Well, I learned every team had a tent on site.  Made for colorful surroundings.]

[Watch out!  Here comes a thundering herd of JV boys, stoked on the energy of coming of age.]

[I tried to stay out of the way while still trying to find my way.]

[There they go – but, aha, maybe some people who can give directions?]

[Past the purple tent, which I believe was Cretin-Durham Hall from St. Paul.]

[Past Monticello, which I believe is the top-ranked girls’ team in the state.]

[To the Waterpark, which I’m sure got plenty of business over the weekend!]

[I found it!  This is where the race begins!  🙂 ]

[The pre-race mingling began.]

[The fans began working their way back to the starting line.]

[I had 10 minutes to kill, so I nosed around my immediate area.  Here was something new!  I had no idea these were back here?  As I said, we only live a mile from Arrowwood and they snuck them in right under our noses.]

[Oh, there go the JV boys again.]

[But back to our new story line.  These are “The Cottages,” and they started building them last fall for opening this summer.  They’re where the old storage pole barn used to be and across the lake access road from the log townhomes.  In fact, if you notice the Arrowwood photo at the top of the story, it’s from their website and still includes the pole barn (upper right).  😉 ]

[Looking from The Cottages through The Townhomes toward beautiful Lake Darling.]

[I walked through The Cottages’ “main street” and came out upon . . . a cross country meet!]

[Looking back toward the lake from the end of The Cottages.]

[Everywhere I roamed I found these.  I believe cross country runners must shed?]

[Back at the starting line – it was somewhere around here I ran into the Dittberners.]

[The teams were beginning to assemble – the Waterpark in the background.]

[The first 200 (?) yards of the race thunder down the hill.]

[Does anybody in the audience know this Colvin?  Echo Press columnist, Jo Colvin, said she has never met any other Colvins in the immediate 5-state area?]

[We’re getting close – further shedding has begun!]

[Runners, take your marks!]

[Fans, run for your lives or you’ll be trampled!]

[A Hasz sister (middle) checks her watch.]

[Get set!]

[Megan and Bethany ready to hit the “start” button on their watches.]

[Here we go!]

[By pure dumb luck, I captured the Bemidji runner, sophomore Jenna Truedson, who is ranked 2nd in the state, as the 168 participants raced by.]

[A canine joins the fray!]

[The pack heads to the first turn – the dog is gaining!]

[I ambled down to that corner where I was told the race would pass two more times.  I ran into a couple of local fans there.]

[Marnee’ and Shanee’ Herd, fabled in song and story.  Shanee’s letter jacket looks like that of a 30-year army sergeant’s.  I don’t know if the hashmarks signify longevity, but she has been varsity lettering for 6 years!]

[Here they come on their first pass by our first vantage point.  There is no way as a novice I’m going to be able to properly identify Bethany and Megan, but at this point one of them has a slight lead on Truedson.]

[Oh, and there’s Colvin again.]

[The Hasz sisters were bracketing Truedson.  Runners used to wear numbers – now they all are identified by a digital chip (I don’t know where they put it?), so everything is electronic.  Doesn’t help spectators on the course!  😉 ]

[And here comes the pack.]

[In the blur of humanity, I may have missed someone, but here’s Julia Sieling, Carol and Dave Dittberner’s granddaughter, the 3rd Cardinal to pass by.]

[Is that the Cards’ Karly Betterman, partially hidden behind New Prague?]

[Monticello girls are No. 1 because of their depth.]

[I somehow missed Emily Thul, but I’ll get her during basketball season.]

[I was advised to head for the finish line after the first pass to make sure my ambling would get me there on time.  I passed the Alex campground in route.]

[I ran across more campgrounds behind the Waterpark.  I had to walk a narrow, steep side hill path to get there and almost lost it on some slippery rocks.  The following headline flashed through my mind:  Old Man Tumbles Down Hill, Perishes, at Cross Country Meet.]

[The finish line is in sight – you can get an idea of the side-hilliness of my endeavor.]

[From the lakeside of The Townhomes.]

[Colorful camp site.]

[Upon further review, there is a person nestled down in there!]

[The finish line funnel.]

[The Dittberners saved me a spot “in the front row.”  It’s always nice to have a press pass.]

[Dave and Carol – they really get excited about these meets!!  🙂 ]

[Uh-oh!  Heading to the finish, Truedson has a lead on the Hasz sisters.]

[They finished 1, 2, 3 as expected.]

Postscript from Coach Mark Nelsen:  Truedson, then Megan, then Bethany all set personal best times and all broke Piepenberg’s previous meet record!

[Here comes Shelby Iverson, Homecoming Queen and hockey captain, as the 3rd Cardinal to cross the finish line.  I missed her on the first pass.]

[Long-timers to the meet know to get rooms with balconies overlooking the finish line.]

[Here comes Julia.]

[Did I lose Karly (?) behind another runner again?  Emily’s right behind her.]

[Emily was a blur at the finish.]

[Shelby’s dad holding court in the middle of the crowd.  🙂 ]

[Proud grandparents with Julia!]

Congratulations to the Lions and all who put this meet together.  The logistics must be incredible.  I will look forward to more meets in the future.

[The Dittberners, who had VIP parking, gave me a ride home.  😉  Finally, a touch of sunshine provided a photo op of the driveway’s red maple.]
