MERRY CHRISTMAS 2016

As one reflects back on events of the past year, one would think that could be source material for the annual Christmas letter.  In fact, I have difficulty imagining another source.  This past year, as with several others of recent vintage, started in winter, moved on to spring, then summer, then autumn, then winter, again.  And yes, despite the continuing onslaught of global climate change (remember . . . it’s science) we will continue to receive snowfalls for the foreseeable future.

[And here’s “Mr. Science” now, applying the scientific method to the holes in napkin rings. How did they get there?  For what purpose?  Were any animals harmed in the production of such rings?  Was TPP responsible for their foreign production?  Will science and facts eventually prevail?  The inquiry continues . . . ]

The year in review . . .

January

Despite daily exhortations from Princess, Viking, Holland America, U of M and IU alumni associations, and Sven and Ole’s trolling motor expeditions on the Long Prairie River, we did not travel this month.

[First, just a quick look back at Christmas last.]

12-24-15-12

1-3-16-20

[As usual, we begin each year with the Super’s birthday!]

1-3-16-39

[I hosted “Shun Li and the Poet,” the community education foreign movie at Grand Arbor. While asking the assembled masses to participate thusly, I did mention they would become international superstars via blog.]

1-4-16-2

[The Super made her acting debut as a juror in the Lakes Area Radio Theatre’s “Trial.”]

1-8-16-3

[After Christmas, Grandson Tom went back to Purdue where he graduated in spring.  It was a monetary relief to one and all.]

1-9-15-4-copy

[This is what 31 degrees below zero windchill looks like.  Yeah, it’s really ugly.]

1-10-16-3

February

[William Kent Krueger came to town.  Cork Corcoran did not come with him.]

2-9-16-5

April

grand-european-tour

[In April, we finally succumbed to the encomiums of Viking River Cruises (OK, you actually have to succumb about a year in advance) for a 3-week adventure from April 18 to May 7 along the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers from Budapest to Amsterdam with stops in between.  I was originally going to regale you with a shot from each city, but sanity prevailed.  Here are a few.]

4-20-16-110

[Budapest, above and below.]

[Buoyed by the success of the fall-featured football team, our winter teams take to the courts and ice rinks full of optimism and energy.  We began the home season with the Cardinal girls roundballers hosting the Rocori Spartans.  Always looking to the future we try to check in with the JV team.  Here junior guard Taylor Partington (5) and sophomore Matie Wirtjes (21) played a little catch out front while sophomore center Emily Jones (45) kept a close eye on the free throw line.]

[Junior forward Emily Aker  (31) joined the fray on the far side.]

12-1-16-75-copy

[With the guards doing the brunt of the scoring in the first, it appeared the idea in the 2nd half was to get the ball inside to Kayla.  For the sake of balance, Kayla can, and should be, a double digit scorer.]

[Where’d it go?]

12-1-16-84-copy

12-1-16-85-copy

[Everybody played, all 16 – the starters did not see the floor for most of the 2nd half.]

12-1-16-86-copy

12-1-16-87-copy

[Senior Kara Thomson (23) may be our best pure shooter.]

12-1-16-88-copy

[And Kiyana finishing up.]

12-1-16-89-copy

[It really wasn’t that close.  I told Brad at the half (we had 44) we wouldn’t hit 70 – you call off the dogs and everybody gets playing time.  Good start to the year – and girls hockey, and boys basketball and hockey, have been exceeding expectations so far!]

Thanksgiving

A real turkey!

[The Super would like to wish everybody a Happy Thanksgiving from the Itasca State Park hostel!]

11-23-16-1-copy

November 24

[Now that Jami is a full-time resident of Clearwater County, we decided to join her there for her first Thanksgiving at the Harn.  The Super and I stayed at the Mississippi Headwaters hostel in Itasca State Park, about 9 miles south of the Harn.  This shot from the lobby out at our car, which was packed like Jami’s truck the week before!]

11-24-16-42-copy

[The rocket stove still needs much more “cob,” the mud insulation that will extend all the way to turn.  In total Danny thinks they will have 3,000 pounds of cob covering, which will make it a lot more efficient and will provide couch type seating.]

[There are some marvelous vistas on County Road 2 between the Harn and Itasca.]

11-24-16-50-copy

[Back in the park, the Mississippi River.]

11-24-16-52-copy

[And Danny and Jami arrive at the hostel for Thanksgiving dinner.]

11-24-16-54-copy

[And so it was Thanksgiving at Itasca State Park.  And believe it or don’t (if you’re a science denier), there was one other couple at the hostel who were from . . . yup, Alex!  We did not know each other but had mutual friends. Go figure?]

11-24-16-55-copy

[Where they come to communicate with the world.]

11-24-16-56-copy

[Smile, Connie and Fred!]

11-24-16-58-copy

[With all the fixin’s!]

11-24-16-59-copy

11-24-16-60-copy

[And Jami made an Elvis Pie!]

November 25

[Hiking Itasca, to the headwaters and then Schoolcraft Trail. This is the first time I can recall being here with snow. So much nicer hiking without having to deal with heat, humidity, bugs, and crowds. We pretty much had the park to ourselves.]

11-25-16-1-copy

11-25-16-2-copy

11-25-16-3-copy

11-25-16-4-copy

[Hi!  Here I am!]

11-25-16-5-copy

11-25-16-6-copy

11-25-16-7-copy

[Of course, it’s pretty hard to call it the “mighty” Mississippi at this point.  Maybe the “ambling” Mississippi?]

11-25-16-8-copy

[This trail wasn’t that easy to find – you had to go down it to a turn before you could see this sign.]

11-25-16-9-copy

[And now the wonders of nature’s artistry.]

11-25-16-10-copy

11-25-16-11-copy

11-25-16-12-copy

11-25-16-13-copy

[A pretty big tree that looked like it had fallen not that long ago.]

11-25-16-14-copy

11-25-16-15-copy

[I think the Super got her first cell phone signal somewhere along here.  Go figure?]

11-25-16-16-copy

[And the river with the lake in the background.]

11-25-16-17-copy

11-25-16-18-copy

[Hmm, haven’t seen that photo yet?]

11-25-16-19-copy

11-25-16-20-copy

[Lest you forgot, only one in 10 Minnesota Thanksgivings are “white.” I think Paul Douglas said that. So, this year was special – even more so with the return of the Minnesota polar bear, as noted by my track sighting while trail walking.]

11-25-16-21-copy

11-25-16-22-copy

[Red pine . . . ‘cuz it’s red!]

11-25-16-23-copy

[And the entire red pine.]

11-25-16-24-copy

[And we’ve happened upon Lake Itasca.]

11-25-16-25-copy

11-25-16-26-copy

[I thought it a cool tree.]

11-25-16-27-copy

[Are we lost?  We’d been on the trail for about 40 minutes.]

11-25-16-28-copy

[And now back at the headwaters.]

11-25-16-29-copy

11-25-16-30-copy

[And the boat landing.]

11-25-16-31-copy

[Five more steps to a full gainer with one and a half twists?]

11-25-16-32-copy

11-25-16-33-copy

[Views up and down the lake.]

November 26

[Driving up to the Harn to say good-bye to Jami and Lucky.  We had never taken this side road 3-mile drive to La Salle Recreation Area before, so why not?]

11-26-16-1-copy

[There’s the lake.]

11-26-16-2-copy

[After a totally gray week, the sun attempted a reappearance late in the morning.]

11-26-16-3-copy

November 27

[Back home, an assortment of George Carlin’s perfect murder weapons hanging outside our bathroom window. The two on the far right are at least 6 feet long. Jousting, anyone? With the wind now blowing the hoarfrost off the trees and roof, it sounded like we were having a hail storm!]

11-27-16-1-copy

11-27-16-2-copy

11-27-16-3-copy

11-27-16-4-copy

11-27-16-5-copy

[With a nice hoarfrost.  Then 10 days after the big snow, it was mostly all gone after an all night and morning heavy rain.]

The Pilgrims had amazing foresight to invent Thanksgiving and football on the same day.
