The Week in Soccer

The staff photographer covered the 1-1 home tie with Moorhead and the 2-1 win at St. Cloud Apollo (the team finished the week with a 1-0 loss at Fergus).  Sarah “Baby Bruiser” Bruzek was named Central Lakes Conference performer of the week, having given up only three goals in five games.  We begin with player introductions for the Moorhead game – we will amend this issue to include player names as they are submitted.  Yup, haven’t been able to actually make a game yet.  First, the Spuds:

Then, at the Eagles:

Other girls sports:  Pilfered from the Echo Press are 8th-grade cross-country runners, Bethany and Megan Hasz.  They seem to finish behind only Card teammate and superstar, Jamie Piepenburg, at multi-team meets.

The Minnesota Lynx won today – they will now play for the WNBA championship.  The point to all of the above is that these are women sports.  And in a state where the men are represented by the likes of the Vikings, Gophers, and Twins, all of whom . . . I was going to say putrid, but that wouldn’t be nice . . . be thankful for the girls.

One shoutout to the guys – Alexandria Golf Club’s Dustin Johnson (r) is pictured here with Dustin Johnson (l), PGA tour star:

And finally, DO IT!!!:

Please Bare* With Me!

The last time there was this much class of ’65 brainpower in one place was when Tom Obert dined alone!!

The above quote is from someone who obviously believes our protagonist was not, as had been rumored, recently released from a South Pacific penal colony.  From his appearance, however, it is obvious that he is about to slink into the dark recesses of techno-geekdom, likely not to return to the civilized world for several days.  The reason?  He is at least three soccer and two volleyball games behind in his reporting.  He has not yet finished his summer vacation report, though the event’s denouement was a month and a half ago.  And this weekend?  Fugeddaboutit!  Homecoming weekend was overrun by five events in the last three days.  The protagonist discovered he has taken 200 photographs over that time – and now has niche cameras!  The ole standby snapshot/video camera; the new “Greg Trumm” standard EOS; and for today’s homecoming parade/football game, the new “Greg Trumm” EOS telephoto.  A sampling:

[I have to admit – I love the telephoto effect down Broadway during the homecoming parade.  And when we arrived at the parade’s end, we were greeted by a gleeful Wendy Kohler, the girls’ basketball coach.  The reason for her glee is readily obvious in the middle photograph – 6th and 7th grade girl basketball players are 6’8″ and can dunk!]

[Note to Harry:  See, I told you – girls are the better athletes!]

[Note to the Trumm family:  I have to admit I referred the two young ladies above to the Alex volleyball coach as potentially terrific blockers!]

[Note to Bob Longfellow:  It was nice to see you for the first time since 1964, when your family moved away from Alex, and that you came back this year for your first ever reunion with the Alex class of ’66!]

[Run, don’t walk, to the polls on Tuesday and pass the new high school referendum!]

*  Editor’s note:  “Bare” is obviously a play on words.  The two Super Fan Ruthies at the homecoming game today, the supervisor and ’65 classmate Ruth Helie Anderson, both admitted they attend football games mainly in hopes of seeing a streaker!]

How I Spent My Summer Vacation (Day 6)

[Master of all he surveys, either napping or preparing to address his minions.]

This was “water” day.  All events seemed to take place on or in the water.  I somehow managed to not participate in any of these things – water is bad for my skin, makes it wet.  Rita and I considered the lake swim but fortunately came to our senses in the nick of time.  We cheered graciously for those who did.  And since we did not have to waste precious time toweling off, we were first in line for breakfast.

[The first thing on the day’s agenda was a mad dash to the Wigwam sock factory in Sheboygan.  This is our annual camp ritual as it coincides with the factory’s annual (or semi-annual?) sale at their plant.  The assembled masses descend on the place with cardboard boxes and paper bags and fill them up with “deals” on socks and hats.  You may recall my birthday photo session in my furry Elmer Fudd hat?]

[Back at camp, The Biddies perused the morning paper, non-biddies went kayaking, and then we all enjoyed breakfast under the sun.]

[In preparation for the afternoon races, Tom took The Biddies, et al, for a morning sail in the big boat.]

Then, the races, beginning with the solo sunfishes – Tom took 3rd:

I then raced from waterfront to the swimming beach to catch the continuing action with The Biddies and Rita’s daughter, Beth . . . and some canoeists:

Then it was on to the doubles:  Defending champ, Dan, with a Normile (Will, Sam, or Oliver?); Caitlin and Andrew; and Karina and Tom:

[Dan, and a Normile.]

[Caitlin and Andrew.]

[Karina and Tom.]

[In a photo finish, Caitlin and Andrew upset the defending champs.  Tom was philosophical about their 3rd place finish – “At least we got the bronze!”]

And finally, it was a beautiful evening for a pontoon ride around the lake – with a full moon:

[Chris & Beth, Rita’s son-in-law and daughter.]

[Our home for the week.]

[The two above was (is?) Tom Cruise’s place.]

How I Spent My Summer Vacation (Day 5+*)

[* a/k/a Let The Games Begin!]

After circumnavigating the lake, activities for the day were just beginning.  I have to admit to bowing out in the first round of horseshoes – probably subconsciously throwing the match so I could get back to full and complete (if not fair and balanced) coverage.  Family and friends heartily competed in doubles cornhole.  I have no recollections as to who won what – no doubt skulduggery reigned!  Anyway, in the above photo, The Biddies were taking on a couple from Illinois; and Tommy and Karina were taking on the mighty duo from Fort Wayne, Scott and Vickie.

To my knowledge, there were no injuries to report.  Faculty Forum was, however, a presentation by a professional athletic trainer – I discovered I had maladies I wasn’t even aware of . . . and the cure for everything is ICE!  That evening Danny captured the full moon on waterfront.

Live long and prosper.
