On to the Section Finals!

2-12-13-82[Thursday night.  Section semi-finals.  Detroit Lakes.  Last year DL upset us in the section finals.  The six seniors, in their final game ever at the RCC, were not about to let it happen again this year.  Total domination.]

Japan'83The band was there.  It was sections after all.  When the band is there, they play the anthem – as it should be.  But we always wonder if we’re playing with fire if Roger and Dusty don’t sing it.  Superstitions, you know.  I guess I never realized how much I was into pomp and circumstance until I noticed I took more photos before the game even started than . . . during the game?  It’s easier – you can see stuff comin’.  When we arrived – maybe 20 minutes before face-off, Roger was all by himself at his spot on the red line.  No one else was around, except for a few band members – their promptness is to be appreciated.  For with just minutes before game time, the arena was still unpopulated.  Was it the wrong night?  Then, suddenly, a big crowd seemed to arrive at once.  Were they playing Bingo in The Warming House?

2-12-13-1

[Mitch Loch, the head coach of the state championship team, was subbing for Andy who was away on family business.]

2-12-13-5

[“The Voices” were there and in fine fettle.  I have no idea where “fine fettle” is?  And I just ended a sentence with “is.”]

2-12-13-8

[Micaela (34), in warm-ups.]

2-12-13-9

[Is it Hanah (11)?]

2-12-13-10

[Starts with a “2” but I have no idea because the first letter of the appears to be a “G.”  We have no Gees!

2-12-13-11

[Hanah (11), but if these people were on the road they would be ticketed because their ponytails block their “license plates”!]

2-12-13-12

[Becca (36) and Taylor (24) along the boards, McKenzie (29), foreground.]

2-12-13-13

[Rachel (4)?]

2-12-13-14

[Rachel (4)!]

2-12-13-15

[A numberless player with a good looking slap shot.]

2-12-13-16

[Shelby (38) chasing Melissa (6)]

2-12-13-17

[Melissa’s slapper.]

2-12-13-18

[Kaila (7)]

2-12-13-19

[Becca (37)]

2-12-13-20

[Becca, the aftermath.]

2-12-13-21

[Rachel, again?]

2-12-13-22

[The band – and I knew that even without uniform numbers!]

2-12-13-23

[Madi (12) and Bailey (35).  Pot roast, you?]

2-12-13-24

[Alfalfa sprouts and a plate of mashed yeast.]

2-12-13-25

[Now what?]

2-12-13-27

[Just a couple folks hanging around the Zamboni.]

2-12-13-28

[The line-up for introductions.]

2-12-13-29

2-12-13-30

2-12-13-32

[How many players can be on the ice at any one time?]

2-12-13-33

[The introductions – Micaela (34).]

2-12-13-34

2-12-13-35

[Shelby]

2-12-13-36

[Becca]

2-12-13-37

[Anna (31)]

2-12-13-38

[Shanee’ (40)]

2-12-13-39

[McKenzie (29)]

2-12-13-40

[Amy (33)]

2-12-13-41

[Aaaaaayyyyyyy!]

2-12-13-42

[Saddle-up, ladies!!]

2-12-13-43

[Band, part deux.]

2-12-13-44

[Aaaaayyyyyyyy!!]

2-12-13-45

[AAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!  (Of course, that’s just a guess.)]

2-12-13-46

[Congratulations, if you hung around this long you made it to the start of the game!]

2-12-13-47

[Amy tending our goal.]

2-12-13-48

[Goodness, it appears our Cardinals have scored!  Becca, from Shanee’ and Anna.  Let the celebration begin!  🙂 ]

2-12-13-49

[Let’s go tell the bench we scored!]

2-12-13-50

[Did you guys see that?  Woo-woo!]

2-12-13-49 2-12-13-51

[Taylor (24) takes the face-off; Madi (12) jumps the gun.]

2-12-13-52

[GOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!]

2-12-13-53

[Anna, from Shelby and Becca]

2-12-13-54

[The lonely life of the goalie.]

2-12-13-55

[Anyone??]

2-12-13-56

[More hugging?  Melissa, from Taylor.]

2-12-13-57

[Not looking good for the Lakers with 7 minutes still left in the 1st period.]

2-12-13-58

[Then the Cards had a defensive boo-boo.  A Laker got in alone and scored – only their 2nd shot of the game.]

2-12-13-59

[Becca and Shelby seem perplexed?]

2-12-13-60

[More likely, they didn’t like it!]

2-12-13-61[So the Cards scored right back!]

2-12-13-62

[Melissa again, from Taylor.]

2-12-13-63

[As we say, Melissa always scores in 2’s.  😉 ]

2-12-13-64

[After one – it was pretty much decided.]

2-12-13-65

[Allegedly known acquaintances of a Bemidji State Beaver.]

I thought I’d try something different with the video this time, wild-eyed adventurer that I am.  At the start of the 2nd period, I went down to ice level behind the DL net.  Uffda, with players and pucks whizzing by me, I got a better feel of what it’s like to be part of the action.  And as a certified coward, I’d want no part of it!  The video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9P9k-3kRLg

As usually happens, because the Cards were so dominant in the game, they had lots of scoring chances while I was shooting.  But no goals during the video.  Within seconds of shutting down the camera, Becca scored on a beautiful one-timer from Shelby.  I was talking to Dan Rooney behind the net and didn’t even have the camera ready for stills!  Arrggghhh!

2-12-13-66

[The aftermath of Becca’s goal.  Nicole also assisted.]

2-12-13-67

[Back in my regular seat, the Cards buzz the Laker net again.]

2-12-13-68

[Becca and Shelby head back on D.]

2-12-13-69

[Card around the DL defense.]

2-12-13-70

[Looks like Hanah taking a draw in the DL zone.]

2-12-13-71

[With Kaila (7) and Mari (18).]

2-12-13-72

[More Cardinal pressure.]

2-12-13-73

[Taylor]

2-12-13-74

[Madi]

2-12-13-75

[After two, the Lakers 2nd goal was on a power play – a deflection on a long shot.]

2-12-13-76

[The Cards were more dominating than the 3-goal lead would indicate.  So, we scored again (puck in the back of the net).]

2-12-13-77

[Becca completing the hat trick, from Shanee’ and Shelby.]

2-12-13-78

[Then Shelby wrapped up the scoring, from Becca and Anna.]

2-12-13-79

[Yay!]

2-12-13-80

[When explaining hockey to a novice, the first rule is if your team is hugging, that’s good!]

2-12-13-81

[Wrapping it up.]

2-12-13-83

[Game over!  🙂 ]

The Cards were the section’s No.1-seed; DL was seeded 4th.  On Friday night, the Cards will face 2nd-seeded Fergus Falls in Detroit Lakes for the section championship.  At least some of the Super Fans will be there – likely hitting Zorbaz first for a pre-game nosh!

About tomobert63

The Journey Begins Thanks for joining me! This is the follow-up to the original, “alexandriacardinals.wordpress.com,” which overwhelmed the system’s ability to handle it any more. Thus, this is “Part 2.” As the original was initially described: 10-26-07-4 “It all began in a 5,000 watt radio station in Fresno, California” . . . wait a minute, that was Ted Baxter on the Mary Tyler Moore Show! Let’s see . . . oh yeah, it all began in 2003 when retirees, i.e., old people, in Alexandria, Minnesota, who had no desire to become snow birds, went looking for mid-winter entertainment here in the frozen tundra of West Central Minnesota. We discovered girls’ high school hockey, fell in love immediately, and it remains our favorite spectator sport to this day. Initially, and for several years, reports on these games were e-mailed to those who were actually snowbirds but wanted to keep abreast of things “back home.” It was ultimately decided a blog would be more efficient, and it evolved into a personal diary of many things that attracts tens of readers on occasion. It remains a source of personal mental therapy and has yet to elicit any lawsuits. ~ The Editor, May 9, 2014 p.s. The photo border around the blog is the Cardinal girls’ hockey team after just beating Breck for the state championship in 2008. It’s of the all-tournament team. The visible Breck player on the left is Milica McMillen, then an 8th-grader – she is now an All-American for the Gophers. The Roseau player in the stocking cap I believe is Mary Loken, who went on to play for UND; and the Cardinal player on the right, No. 3, is Abby Williams, the player we blame most for making us girls’ hockey fans who went on to play for Bemidji State. *********************************************************************************** Photos contained herein are available for personal use. All you have to do is double click on any of the photos and they will become full screen size. You can then save them into your personal “My Pictures” file. They make lovely parting or hostess gifts, or holiday gifts for such as Uncle Ernie who wants to see how his grand niece is doing on the hockey team. If any are sold for personal profit, however, to, for example, the Audubon Society, National Geographic, Sven’s Home Workshop Monthly, Curling By The Numbers, or the World Wrestling Federation, I only request that you make a donation to the charitable organization of your choice. You have two hours and fifteen minutes. Pencils ready? Begin! **********************************************************************************
